The mills are gone, nearby Loring Air Force Base closed several years ago, and agriculture in the rocky hills is no longer profitable enough to support more than a handful of working farms.  Many of Stockholm's residents today are retired farmers who have lived their whole lives in the community, or retirees from elsewhere who were drawn to the place by its natural beauty and slow pace of life.
