Farm Buildings

The Swedish farmers of Aroostook county were often praised for their neat, well kept buildings and farms, like the attractive home at right.

Stockholm Farm House

Axel Tall's home (c. 1940) is an example  of the style of farm houses found in Stockholm.

In a speech of welcome on the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the first Swedish settlement in Maine, Rev. Michael Norberg observed, "Gentlemen and fellow citizens of Maine, I do not need to boast....Take a careful view of the colony and you will find beautiful farms, well cultivated; big barns and storehouses for the produce of the farms; nice residences...and a law abiding people who fear God and do what is right to everybody."

The Mons Jepson homestead in neighboring New Sweden was on of the earliest Swedish farms in the area, and shows the typical layout of the farm buildings.  Unlike Southern Maine, with its predominate style of attached barns, barns in this community are generally separate from the house.
